The long-awaited 5th studio album is finally here. How do you feel about it?

A: I’m super excited and very much relieved that this moment is finally. It has been grueling work and emotionally draining. I do believe people are in for a treat.

Q: Tell us about the composition of this album, the songs, the themes and the overall messaging?

A: the overlying theme is that of matters of the heart, relationships, self love, asserting and standing up for yourself, and a lament for better leadership for the continent by praising and pointing out what qualities make a great leader. The overall message is always self love begets love for humanity.

Q: What role did recording in (the place) Mali play in this album? And tell us about the experience of recording with the legendary Salif? Why him?

A: Mali is a country after my own heart. The musicality of Mali is godly. I am tempted to believe that the whole world learned How to make and play string instruments from them. Of course I have no proof of this. I went to Mali to enhance the music production of my work. I worked with the legendary Salif Keita. And his musicians of which Djessou Mory Kante and Madou Diabate stand out. Why Salif? Because at every party or dinner that I have ever hosted he’s a fixture in my Dj list. I love how he composes music, and his vocal prowess - plus his story is very heartwarming. He’s truly a living legend.

Q: What makes you the most proud about this album?

A: that I did that! That I overcome my impostor syndrome and spent all those months crafting this gift. That I finally had the courage to acknowledge my producing skills. I did so much production on Kulture Noir and Firebrand and never credited myself. And working with Salif Keita and his people is the cherry on top.

Q: Is the album different from any work you've done in the past and if so, how is it different?

A: I wouldn’t be able to say. I do know that my personal, emotional and spiritual growth is never out of the scope of who I am. I look forward to all the critique that will be written about it, and feedback from my fans.

Q: How long did it take to record the album and why do you think now is the time to release it?

A: it took 3 years to write and record the album. There has been many postponements of the release - all for valid reasons, and it has been very stressful. I’m relieved it’s finally coming out. My fans were also feeling very jaded by how long it was taking.

Q: In an interview we once did, you once said that you never really write music about you but about the world around you. Does that statement still stand?

A: I do believe that I said that I am inspired by the human condition rather. And then I use my own experiences to work through it. And that it is this authenticity that people emotionally identify with in my music.

Q: Who does the album feature?

A: Salif Keita and Vieux Farka Toure.

Q: How have the singles Usikhonzile and Uzokhala been received thus far?

A: the reception has been great. But I am yet to receive the stats from the label so I can ascertain just how well.

Q: 5th studio album is an achievement, how many more albums does Ms Dana have in her? How many more years of the industry do you still have left in you?

A: frankly it’s hard to say. I move as the spirit moves.

Q: If you could describe where you are mentally right now (in this phase of life), where would you say you are? 

A: I don’t think I have ever been more depressed and anxious as I have been the past 2 years. There literally were months when I couldn’t get out of bed. I couldn’t drive because I’d have panic attacks. I have lost friends because I couldn’t be there for them in the ways that count to them. I’m hoping that it was all for something. I’m feeling better now.
